What is dengue fever?

What to know as Puerto Rico declares epidemic due to virus spike. Over 500 cases have been reported this year, prompting a public health emergency declaration.

Travelers are urged to take precautions against this mosquito-borne illness. According to the CDC, about 1 in 4 people infected with dengue develop symptoms, and 1 in 20 people who contract the virus suffer severe illness.
The most common symptoms are:

  • Fever, along with nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Rashes
  • Eye pain
  • Muscle pain, joint pain, and bone pain.

Symptoms generally last two to seven days. However, around 5% of those who get sick from the virus develop severe symptoms.
